BioEntrepreneurial Idea Blog Post

i dont have a picture or link to my idea because it doesnt exsist.. but ill try to explain it-

its basically a miniature computerized submarine. So small that it fits in the body and destroys bacteria or anything harmful in the body. It shoots like... lasers or pointy projectiles... cant really explain.

to me it would be great- destroying harmful things in the body, but it would be a very expensive thing. but a downside would be that some rich athletes could destroy steroids in their urine or some other misuse of this idea.

the hardest part probably in my idea is making something smaller then cappilaries but that can destroy cells and things. Also having it not hurt anything benefitial to the body

Biological Breakthrough- Alligators

It has been discovered and is currently being researched, that alligator blood has the abiity to help cure anti-biotic resistant infections. It was first found, when alligators suffer from territorial fights, that even with open wounds- they dont get infected or show and synthoms.
"We're very excited about the potential of these alligator blood proteins as both antibacterial and antifungal agents," said study co-author Dr. Mark Merchant, a biochemist at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La, who hit up on the idea of studying alligator blood after noticing the creatures have a remarkable ability to resist infection, despite living in swamp water teeming with bacteria and often losing limbs in territorial tussles."
The breaking discovery can lead to curs for many things: E. Coli, Salmonella, food poisoning, MSRA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), etc. Their immune system is strong enough that they dont need to be exposed to a weakened pathogen. Hopefully in the future and right now, lots of entrepenurs will invest in this study and help find useful products.

Biological Entrepreneurs- Funded Stanford

<-- image

A while back in 2000, Standford was funded 5.3 million for a interdisciplinary project. Many things were happening for them. They had their scientists and enginerrs work together. They used technology and thinking to find out many things about the cell. One example is - "major objective is to develop new instrumentation capable of analyzing the extremely complex world of cell division and growth"

"Another objective of the DARPA project, says McAdams, is to develop new technologies capable of rapidly analyzing the function of thousands of genes simultaneously. Researchers will use robotic microinjection, high-speed automated microscopy and other innovative techniques that McAdams predicts "could completely change the way biological research is done."

That was in the year 2000 but it helps us today tofurther investigate cells and life itself.

Biological Entrepreneurs- Countries

I haven't researched a specific person. But I learned that many countries invested as entrepreneurs in biological weapons. Mainly in WWII, lots of nations like Germany, UK, and US developed many weapons. Japan invested in the study to make some plagues. They experimented on Koreans and Chinese with infected bugs and not gas. Also, Nazis used many inmates in concentration camps. Lots of people and countires invested lots of money in biological weapons in history and also to fight bioterrorism. The Cold War sped up the technology and power of the biochemical nuke and also nuclear weapons at the same time. But since the 1972 Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention, the developement, production, and build-up of weapons was banned. But only a few could be kept for peaceful research. And in 1991 Iraq admitted of making concentrated botulinum toxin for military weapons. "Weapons of Mass Destruction".
So throughout the recent political history within the few decades, many countires has spend billions studying and making powerful biological weapons.

Optometrist

So Dr. Pamela Fong came over Mr. Olson's bio class today. She showed us how the eye is an amazing thing. I learned that light-haired people have light eyes and usually a blue iris. Young people have this white thing and old people are far-sighted.
And I also learned, while stabbing at a sheep eye, that the eye is very complex. It has many interesting things inside it, like the gooey gel.
Today is Sunday, I just got my new glasses because im very near-sighted and my vision sucks. But now i can see perfectly fine compared mith my 5-year-old glasses which i got while in the 6th grade. outdated

Dr. Freemans

The Death Cap

Dr. Freeman and his wife came to our bio class, He taught us about fungi and mushrooms. He also passed around mushrooms and a lot of us had fun. The best mushroom was the spore puffing one. There are over 15 types of fungi used in medicine today so they are great organisms. Some are delicious but others are deadly like the Death Cap (Above). The next time i go camping im going to find shrooms.

Komodo Dragon

Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Family: Varanidae
Genus/species: Varanus komodoensis

The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard in the world today.. The biggest recorded one was 10.3 feet (3.13 m) and weighed 366 pounds (166 kg). They use smell as a primary sense. In the wild, Komodos eat almost any type of meat. Their bite is extremly deadly because they have so much bacteria in their mouth, one bite can kill you after a few days. They usually live for 30 years. Not much is known still, like why they dont die when biting each other ( over 50 different bacterial species, 7 septic ones in their salaiva and teeth) and if they can live longer.

More info can be found at the site where I found these facts: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/ReptilesAmphibians/Facts/FactSheets/Komododragon.cfm
